Project KYR/SGP/OP5/Y5/STAR/BD/15/05 «Empowerment of protected areas of the Issyk-Kul and Naryn regions of Kyrgyzstan through the development and piloting of the system of long-term monitoring of the snow leopard’s population and its food base, as well as the involvement of the local population to identify cases of poaching».

The mainobjective is development of the unified system of the long-term monitoring of the snow leopard’s population  in Kyrgyzstan

  1. Conduction of the meeting with organizations working in the field of protection of the snow leopard (SLT, NABU, Panthera, WWF and others) and representatives of the nature protected areas for the development and implementation of the unified system of the long-term monitoring of the snow leopard’s population in Kyrgyzstan.
  2. Purchasing (together with the State Agency on Nature protection and forestry of the  KR) the required field equipment and special equipment (camera traps) to collect data on the number of the snow leopard and its food base.
  3. Together with local scientists and community representatives to organize and conduct 4 field expeditions(to Sarychat - Ertash State Reserve, Naryn State Reserve, natural park "Salkyn Tor" and Karakol Nature Par) to install camera traps and organize a survey during the expedition in order to collect oral and written reports about facts of meetings with snow leopards.
  4. Development and publishing of the instructions (manual) for installing camera traps and monitoring for the staff of protection areas.
  5. Collection of information from camera traps during repeated research expeditions in 4 pilot protected areas and to develop a concept and structure of the unified database
  6. Publishing a report on the results of the expedition, available for general public.
  7.  Make additional information boards at the Snow leopard exhibition on the basis of the Museum of the Issyk-Kul” biosphere territory in Balykchy city.
  8. Conducting broad information campaign about the snow leopard for broad population of the Issyk-Kul and Naryn provinces of Kyrgyzstan and the rangers from pilot nature protection areas and motivate them to seek innovative ways for the protection of the snow leopard and reveal of the poaching cases.
  9. Development of a promotional video about results of the expeditions, available for general public.
  10.  Holding a  press conference to highlight the results of the project in the media.
